Self-Awareness & Executive Presence

Case Study: Self-Awareness & Executive Presence

Leadership abilities - A top-level executive at a corporation in Bangalore, let’s call him Arun, was struggling with a lack of confidence in his leadership abilities. He felt quite alone at the top, opportunities to validate thoughts and decisions with his co-workers had become rare as he had moved up through the ranks. He felt inadequate at times, wasn’t sure whether his co-workers and superiors respected him, a predicament that made him reluctant to be assertive in many cases where he should have been.

Objective

The ultimate objective of Cupela’s leadership coaching process was to enhance Arun’s leadership presence. This can mean a lot of different things, depending on the individual person. In his case, it was clear very early on, that the solutions to Arun’s problems would be mostly based on coaching him to increase his confidence as well as to improve his communication skills.

 Process

We started the process with a 360º feedback. This helped Arun receive candid feedback from his coworkers and superiors, which then enabled us to devise a strategy for his self-improvement. Deep conversations with Arun about his life helped his coach to understand the root cause of the issues he was facing. During our leadership coaching process, it became apparent that Arun’s rural upbringing had in the past triggered a lack of confidence in his English language skills. This lack of confidence continued to affect him even after moving to Bangalore. The lack of confidence continued affecting him into the presence, despite the fact, that his language skills had significantly improved.

Increasing Self-Awareness

Many factors during our past – most of them subconscious – impact our demeanor today, especially if we are in a leadership position like Arun. He needed, with the help of his coach, to take a step back. In other words, to look at his everyday behavior from a different, more analytical perspective.
Our deep coaching helped him to identify where he had been affected by long resolved, yet in his subconscious still very present inadequacies. Now, finally armed with this insight into his own subconscious, he was finally able to choose different, more assertive ways of interacting with the people around him.

Falling Back on Strengths

The 360º feedback as part of his coaching processes revealed many strengths, especially the revelation that Arun was a sought after mentor and a respected advisor for managing difficult customer situations.
